Visitor Center, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Santa Cruz, California

A partner project between National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) National Marine Sanctuary Program and the City of Santa Cruz. The visitor center will be located in the “Fun Spot” of City of Santa Cruz, where the famous Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, world class surfing at Steamers Lane, and Lighthouse Point area. The two-story building, designed to meet criteria for LEED, will include exhibits, administrative offices, a gift shop and a state-of-the-art teaching classroom offering programs to K-12 school groups and for public/professional meetings. The interactive technologies will provide real-time exhibition allowing visitors to explore its national marine sanctuary system. Predesign was completed in April, 2005. The project is currently waiting for federal funding.
