Genome Launch Facility, UC Davis

University of California, Davis

The new Genomics program needed a start-up facility while awaiting completion of a permanent building.  This 21,500 square foot building contains laboratories, vivarium, and offices.  It houses the genomics, bioinformatics and Seed Biotechnology Center/California Crop Improvement Association research groups during the early phase of the UC Davis Genome Program.  Laboratories are located in two zones at the southern end of the building.  Each zone is composed of a large, open laboratory along the perimeter, adjacent to an internal bank of specialty laboratories and linked by the equipment corridor.  Offices, located across a central lobby, are planned as flexible suites serving several faculty and research groups.  The building turns over to the College of Agriculture when Genomics moves to its permanent facility.  Our mechanical system features a 200-ton evaporatively cooled rooftop chiller, a 20-ton variable-air-volume air-handling unit for the offices and an 18-ton variable-air-volume air-handing unit for the labs, plus separate laboratory fume and general exhaust systems.  For energy efficiency, indirect evaporative pre-cooling reduces the chiller load by 43%.
