PROJECTS
Gero-Psychiatric Replacement Hospital
Veterans Administration, Menlo Park, California
Guttmann & Blaevoet provided mechanical design for this 120-bed in-patient facility which houses a unique program dedicated to psychiatric and skilled nursing care for three generations of veterans. The facility consists of six nursing wings in three buildings, one of which is competely secure, plus support services including clinic, chapel, utility, and administration structures. Our mechanical design maximizes energy efficiency utilizing chillers and pumps with variable frequency drives and a variable air volume system in the nursing and support areas. The clinic building requires a constant air volume system. Our energy analysis resulted in a building design that exceeds the 2005 California energy code by 16% and qualified for $24,868 in PG&E owner incentives. Our services for this design/build project continued through design development and met all VA and IBC design standards. This is the first VA project in the nation that intends to achieve LEED certification.
