Tully Community Branch Library

San Jose, California

This new branch library is a pilot project for San Jose’s Green Building Program. Our energy analysis resulted in an integrated design that incorporates appropriate siting, envelope design, energy efficiency, maximum use of daylighting and high-efficiency lighting, green materials, and indoor environmental quality. Our mechanical design includes underfloor air distribution system. Serving a large and culturally diverse community, program spaces include computer lab, community living room, children’s area with storytime barn reflecting an actual barn adjacent to the site, teen homework center, and internet cafe. The library is designed in conjunction with a neighborhood sports and recreation facility and adjancen to the city’s equestrian police facility. Our energy analysis resulted in a design that exceeds California’s 2001 energy code by 18.5 percent.
