High Performance Healing Environments Energy Conservation Applications in Healthcare Facilities
California leads the country in programs to encourage owners to design, build, and operate high performance buildings. Energy use in buildings is regulated by code in every state. However, the vast majority of states exempt licensed health care facilities from the requirements of these codes. As a result, quantitative information on the performance of various design strategies for health care facilities is limited. Through our involvement with Pacific Gas & Electric’s innovative Savings By Design for Healthcare incentive program we have developed quantitative information on energy saving opportunities for whole building design and infrastructure strategies for health care facilities. Through a review of building design based on detailed energy modeling, we provide practitioners with information on the benefits of specific design and environmental strategies. Case studies show how specific projects incorporated various design strategies, and the level of performance they achieved.
